Family Bound
Guest Review As the title suggests, this book is a chronicle of one couple's journey through infertility and adoption. It takes the format of journal entries through the infertility treatments and the adoption of their son, with a summary of his first year home at the end.

"Family Bound," by Carrie Ostrea
The entries during the infertility treatments capture very well the isolation and pain experienced by author Carrie Ostrea and her husband Robert. They struggle with infertility for years and, after failed IVF attempts, look at domestic adoption. The difficulty they had with screening calls and the possibility of maintaining contact after adoption, sent them back to try using an egg donor. When this failed, they turned to international adoption.
The author's emotions are almost palpable during the fertility treatment portion of the book. It is very easy to feel the emotional upheaval that the up and downs of treatment bring about. This is also true when she talks of their domestic adoption attempt, I suspect mainly because there was no real resolution to adopt at that time. Once they turn their attention to adopting internationally, however, the entries become a little like a laundry list.
Overall it was an interesting book and I would certainly recommend to anyone going through infertility treatment or who is close to someone who is. I could identify with the isolation and drawing back from the world they experienced and it was nice to see we weren't alone in this. The adoption portion I found less interesting and, because of my commitment to open adoption, too dismissive of the open adoption option.
